Measure the outside of each frame
This tool lays out decorative rectangular picture frames on a wall. End margins are measured from the wall end to the outside of the first or last frame. Gaps are the clear distances between outer frame edges. It does not calculate raised panels, recessed panels or structural wall systems.
Example: three frames on a 144-inch wall
Two 6-inch end margins use 12 inches. Two 6-inch spaces between frames use another 12. The remaining 120 inches divide into three 40-inch-wide frames. Their left edges are 6, 52 and 98 inches from the reference end.
Outer width versus visible opening
A 40-inch outer width with 1½-inch trim leaves a 37-inch opening. A 36-inch outer height leaves a 33-inch opening. These are geometric dimensions in a flat elevation. Mitre allowances, the trim profile and the way measurements transfer to a saw need a separate cutting plan.
Check the wall as a whole
A balanced formula may still collide with an outlet, furniture or an uneven ceiling. Mark the layout with removable tape before committing to it. The calculator does not choose a design style or verify fixing methods. Adjust margins, count and height together until the measured layout works on site.
Questions, answered
Does it make a mitre cut list?
No. It returns frame outer dimensions and openings. Establish how your trim profile is measured and allow for cuts separately.
Can end margins differ?
This version uses equal end margins. For an asymmetrical wall, choose and measure a separate symmetrical working area first.
