Measure a wall for a decorative batten layout
Prepare a useful set of wall measurements before calculating battens or picture-frame panels. Include edges, obstructions and a reference line.
Define the working area
Decide whether your layout spans the whole wall or a measured section between features. Record the start and end of that area. A door opening or projecting trim should not silently become part of a continuous decorative wall width.
Measure at more than one height
Walls may taper or bow. Compare widths near the proposed top and bottom of the battens and note discrepancies. A single number is necessary for the calculator, but it cannot describe every imperfection. Choose the layout line deliberately and verify the plan against the real wall.
Record obstructions on the sketch
Mark switches, outlets, vents, pipes, furniture and changes in skirting. Include their widths and positions from the same reference edge. The calculator’s uniform diagram does not know those items exist, so a visually neat result is not proof that every board position is usable.
Tape out the result
Use removable tape or light temporary marks to check the first board, last board and several intermediate positions. Confirm whether your measurements refer to left edges or centres. A second measurement from the opposite end can expose an accumulated error before materials are cut.
Separate layout from installation
Before drilling or fixing, assess the wall construction and concealed services using appropriate methods and qualified help where needed. This tool supplies decorative geometry only. It does not specify fasteners, structural adequacy or compliance with building requirements.
Questions, answered
What if top and bottom widths differ?
Do not assume the calculator can correct an uneven wall. Record the difference and plan the installation and visual alignment separately.
Should I include baseboard height?
The batten height input should describe the vertical pieces you intend to use. Rails, skirting and returns need their own measurements.
